Open Mental Health First Aid Courses

Our Open Mental Health First Aid Courses are the perfect way to train a whole team, or just yourself! All of our courses are delivered by qualified and experienced MHFA England Instructors, so you’re in good hands.

Mental Health First Aid Open Courses

The Mental Health First Aid Two-Day Course is the most popular course offered by MHFA England.

Delegates who complete the course qualify as Mental Health First Aiders, and are able to support those around them through mental health conversations.

MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

Importantly, the course also gives you the tools to set appropriate boundaries with others, allowing you to protect your own mental health.

MHFA Course Learning Objectives

Upon completing the course, attendees will have:

    • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing.
    • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues.
    • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress.
    • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening.
    • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support.

“A challenging subject delivered with compassion and professionalism. The boundaries clearly and repeatedly articulated to keep us safe was central to the training and much appreciated. New Leaf highly recommended.”

Joe Cohen

Who should be a Mental Health First Aider?

This course is suitable for anyone, and no prior knowledge or skills are required.

The course is particularly useful for those in HR roles, in addition to those who regularly have contact with other in their workplace.

Successful MHFAiders will – depending on the requirements of your organisation – need to make time available during the working week to have mental health conversations with colleagues, and be available to respond in a crisis.

Please note, this course is designed specifically for delegates and businesses that are based in England. The resources and guidance refer to public health information that is specific to England. Whilst delegates from other countries can attend, their role should involve supporting delegates based in England.

Scotland and Wales both have separate organisations for MHFA, based on respective national guidelines. For more information, please visit their websites:

Wales – www.mhfawales.org

What kind of Qualification is this?

This course has been developed by MHFA England, which is part of the worldwide Mental Health First Aid organisation.

MHFA England is the only recognised provider of Mental Health First Aid in England.

Here at New Leaf Health, we have a variety of highly experienced practitioners who have trained as instructors with MHFA England. As such, the course we offer is the official Mental Health First Aid Training Course, licensed by MHFA England.

Upon completion of the course, you will be recognised as a qualified Mental Health First Aider for a period of 3 years. You can continue your qualification by taking a MHFA Refresher Course every 3 years.

How many people can attend the course?

In our open courses, we train up to 16 attendees at a time, all from a range of different organisations. You can book up to 7 places on an open course. If you’ve got 8 or more delegates you’d like to train, it’s usually more cost-effective and efficient to book a private course for your business.

More Information on MHFA Two-Day Open Courses

This is a type of course format where, rather than training delegates just from one organisation, we have delegates from multiple organisations train together.

This helps us achieve the minimum number of delegates for a course (8 for the the MHFA Two-Day Course), whilst allowing individuals and small groups to get a qualification, without footing the bill for a full 16-person course.

Yes, it’s exactly the same course and qualification. The delivery method is also identical, but you’ll be training with delegates from other organisations, rather than just in-house.

It’s a total of 16 hours (with breaks built-in). We train this over the course of two consecutive days. You’ll need to attend both days in full in order to complete the course.

Yes, this course is certified by MHFA England. All of our trainers are fully qualified MHFA England trainers, and have vast experience in training delegates in the workplace.

It varies based on demand, but we tend to run at least one MHFA two-day open course per quarter, so around four per year.
