Overview
Workplace Mental Health Training for Managers
Mental health training for managers is essential for businesses that want to support the mental wellbeing of their employees.
This 7-hour mental health awareness training course is designed to support anyone involved in the management of people, such as line managers, supervisors, HR professionals and occupational health staff.
The course will provide practical guidance and give attendees the skills and confidence to have those difficult, and often challenging, conversations around mental health and wellbeing.
Course Description
Mental Health Awareness Training for Managers: Course Overview
The Managing Mental Health Course is designed to give workplace leaders the tools and knowledge to promote positive mental health at work successfully.
Attendees will not only understand more about mental health (including the legal guidelines around mental health at work), but will learn how to have mental health conversations with staff, which can often prove challenging.
All of this learning takes place whilst establishing safe boundaries to protect the mental health of everyone involved.
Our Approach
Practical Training for Real Workplaces
This CPD-certified course is designed for real mental health conversations between real people. We use facilitated, trainer-led scenarios to give real world examples of how to have difficult mental health conversations, whilst making sure colleagues are safe and supported.
Trainers who understand workplaces
Our trainers draw experience from their work with businesses of all sizes, across a variety of sectors, including manufacturing, rail, healthcare, charities, and more.
Confidence, not extra workload
We focus on building skills, knowledge, and confidence, while keeping everyone safe and supported with clear boundaries. Instead of giving managers extra responsibility, this course gives attendees the confidence to actually deal with situations they’re already facing on a daily basis, but just don’t have the tools to tackle yet.

Who It's For
Who is this Course for?
This course is designed for leaders who manage people in the workplace, regardless of job title. As an example, people who attend this course may include:
Line managers
Line managers have a direct responsibility for their team members. Not only from a performance point of view, but also in terms of health and safety. A line manager who is trained to support the mental health of their colleagues is better equipped to lead happier, healthier, more productive teams.
Supervisors and workplace leaders
Supervisors and workplace leaders may have less overall responsibility for team members, but are still excellently positioned to play a supportive role. Mental health skills allow supervisors and leaders to support staff and direct them to further help when required.
HR professionals
HR professionals may not be directly responsible for teams outside of their own department, but they are responsible for for people in their workplace – it’s in the name. HR colleagues who train in manager mental health skills will not only be able to offer additional support to colleagues around the business, but can also demonstrate the necessary skills and responsibilities to all other leaders in the workplace, including senior leadership.

What kind of qualification is this?
The Managing Mental Health Course was developed in-house at New Leaf Health, based on years of experience, industry best practice and extensive research with wellbeing professionals.
The course is CPD-certified for active learning, so attendees can claim active learning hours towards their professional development requirements.
It isn’t an MHFA England qualification. If you need certified Mental Health First Aiders, take a look at our Workplace Mental Health First Aid courses.
Is this course available online?
Yes. This mental health training for managers is available online through a meeting platform of your choice, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet.
The online course runs in exactly the same way as the face-to-face course, so your managers won’t miss out on any knowledge or experience by attending online. If you’d prefer to train in person, we can deliver it at your workplace instead.
How does this compare to Mental Health First Aid?
They do different jobs, and many organisations use both.
Mental Health First Aid is certified by MHFA England. It trains people across your organisation to spot the signs of a mental health issue and respond as a Mental Health First Aider.
This course is designed specifically for people who manage others. It covers the management side of mental health:
- having supportive conversations with team members;
- the legislation and guidelines around mental health at work;
- referral processes;
- setting healthy boundaries.
If you’d like a shorter introduction to MHFA for your wider team, see our MHFA Champions and MHFA Aware courses.
Why train managers to support mental health?
We all have mental health, and we’ll all go through periods of good and poor mental health in our lives. Being aware of what mental health is, and how we can support ourselves and others, is crucial to a happier and more productive working environment.
Managers are expected to support their teams in all aspects of working life, and mental health now plays a big part in that. They’re often the first point of contact when someone’s struggling. Employers also have a legal duty to assess and manage the risk of work-related stress, as set out by the Health and Safety Executive.
Trained managers are better placed to notice early signs, have supportive conversations and know when to refer someone on. For more on building a wider approach, read our guides to workplace mental health frameworks and how to prevent burnout at work.
