Twelve intrepid Stourbridge men aim to complete three days of physical endurance to help raise money for the Debra Drew Fund. Starting May 4th, this fund raiser with a difference involves 4 teams driving 3 barely roadworthy cars to North Wales, Liverpool and back, taking up some competitive challenges en route, including a race up Mount Snowdon, swimming Lake Bala and a cycle relay to Liverpool. The participants – collectively known as “Voters” – have already raised the money to buy the Bangers that on completion will be sold for Cash, with all proceeds going to the fundraise.
On the 26th August 2014 Debra Drew was holidaying with her two sons and friends in Devon. Whilst body boarding at Woolacombe beach, Debra went to the aid of a young boy and in doing so was nearly drowned. She was pulled from the water, alongside the boy whereby friends and RNLI lifesavers worked to save Debra until she was airlifted to Barnstaple Hospital. The young boy survived and made a complete recovery. Debra was in a critical condition for many months but after much medical intervention her condition improved and stabilised. She now faces a long road ahead with gruelling physio, occupational, speech and language therapy and neurological treatment but throughout this time Deb has shown her trademark determination and dedication to the work required.
Debra aims to be back home by Christmas 2017. To achieve this, a wheelchair that will enable her to stand and operate it on her own is needed. This specially designed chair will cost in excess of £20,000 and it is the aim of the Voter fundraiser effort in conjunction with that of Pedmore Sporting Club to raise funds to buy this chair outright.
Fundraising is on track, with 16 local businesses already making contributions. However, we still need donations from citizens of the Stourbridge area and beyond to help towards this exceptionally good cause.
